How long after a funeral do you send thank you cards?

Given the difficult circumstances surrounding a funeral, there are no formal rules about when you should send thank you cards. It could range from 1 week to 1 year after the funeral depending on when you feel comfortable. However, if you feel you are ready, we would recommend sending them 2 to 4 weeks after the service.

What should I say in a thank you card?

Thank the recipient for attending the funeral. It is good etiquette to thank them for any support they have given you, whether it was financial support, charity donations, help with funeral planning, or other practical assistance. Sign the card with your full name at the end. For more information on what you could include, please click here to see our blog on the topic. There, you will find helpful example wording to help you get started on your own cards.

Is it proper etiquette to send thank you cards for sympathy cards?

It is up to you if you wish to send thank you cards in response to sympathy cards. Many people choose to send them only to people who attended the funeral or gave you lots of support after your loss. But if you would like to show appreciation for a sympathy card, it will surely be appreciated by the recipient. You can read more about this on our blog.
