How to have a celebration of life ceremony

A celebration of life ceremony is a joyful celebration of a departed loved one. While a funeral is a sombre occasion, celebrations of life are usually more casual. Because of this, the way you choose to host one is very flexible. It's all about how you and your family wish to remember and celebrate your loved one.

For the venue, you might choose a significant location the departed loved, such as their favourite park, a local establishment, or simply at home.

There aren't any formal rules for when to host such an event, so think about when you, friends, and family will feel ready for it. For some, it might be a few weeks after the burial or cremation. For others, it could be the anniversary of their passing.

There are no rules for content or dress code, so you can tailor the day as you wish. Just bear everyone's feelings in mind as you plan, and remember that although it's a happy occasion, it's likely that emotions will still include grief as you reminisce.

What to include on a celebration of life invitation?

Add the name of your departed love one, including their date of birth and death. Make sure to prominently show the date on which the celebration of life ceremony will be held, along with the venue and starting time. If there is a dress code or any other important details guests need to know, put these into your wording. It's also a good idea to briefly explain what kind of event this will be, perhaps with a phrase such as 'we invite you to celebrate the life of Mary Brown with a memorial service, followed by light refreshments'. This is especially important if you are planning something a bit more unusual, like the popular tree planting ceremony.
